Many older Macs lost out on the ability to run OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3!), but some hard working fellows have created a free third party tool called MLPostFactor that allows for the newest version of OS X to be installed on older, officially unsupported Macs. MacBook 4,1 has a maximum OS X version of Lion. By now, it has some serious software limitations. I tried MacPostFactor but, though it worked with Yosemite, there were extreme issues.
The Problems:
I installed El Capitan with Unibeast (6.2.0) and the results are promising compared to MacPostFactor. I'm impressed with how easy it was. However, the difficulties are with post installation of missing drivers.
Here are the problems:
- Keyboard and trackpad DO NOT WORK (I'm using USB keyboard and mouse right now)
- Laptop does not enter sleep mode when the lid is closed.
- Choppy graphics (bad but usable). MacBook 4,1 uses an Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphic processor
- No audio
I found another post on the forum where someone else had made a post about a GMA X3100 graphic solution but the post was made for a PC. I'm anxious to hear feedback here before possibly having to reinstall again (a 1+ hour project).
I heard about problems with ethernet but I haven't been able to test that yet. I'm more concerned about these other problems.
